Microcephaly

Microcephaly is a neurodevelopment disorder in which the nerve connections in a baby’s brain haven’t fully developed yet. While these connections are being made and the brain is still growing, the bones that make up the skull will fuse together, limiting any further brain growth. As a result, the child’s head will be below average size.

Microcephaly is an irreversible condition that will affect a child for the rest of his or her life. Children with microcephaly may experience developmental delays, mental retardation, seizures, cognitive impairment, impaired motor function, speech problems, dwarfism, facial distortions, hyperactivity, and more.

Although microcephaly is generally caused by a genetic abnormality or maternal problems, such as alcoholism or drug use, there are many instances in which microcephaly is caused by a serious birth injury.  If you can prove that a doctor's, or hospital’s, negligence during labor or delivery led to a birth injury that eventually caused or contributed to your child developing microcephaly, you may be able to recover damages for your child’s pain and suffering, reduced quality of life, medical expenses, future medical care, adaptive equipment, physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy.
